Google Secrets
Most people know that you can type any word or phrase into Google to find all web pages that mention them. However, over the years, Google programmers have snuck in some neat "shortcuts" to speed up your searches.
The first trick involves Stock Quotes. Typing any stock abbreviation in a Google blank will display a small chart and info on that stock as the first result.
Parcel tracking IDs, patents and other specialized numbers can be entered into Google's search box for quick access to information about them. For example, typing a FedEx tracking number will return the latest information on your package. Other special search-by-number types include:
UPS Tracking Numbers
FedEx Tracking Numbers
USPS Tracking Numbers
Vehicle ID (VIN) Numbers
UPC Codes
Telephone Area Codes
Patent Numbers (type "patent" first)
FAA Airplane Registration Numbers
FCC Equipment IDs (type "fcc" first)
Finally, typing the word "define" and then a term will bring up a definition. For instance, typing
define megabyte
will remind you that a megabyte is around one million bytes. Typing a colon after the word "define" will list a number of definitions from various sources.
