At least an attempted mass murder - reportedly several people were shot.
One suspect has been arrested but police are looking for another.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A shooting at a Virginia Tech dormitory on Monday left at least one person dead, a state government official with knowledge of the case told The Associated Press. One suspect is said to be in custody, with another suspect still at large.
Meantime, officials said there were seven to eight additional casualties.

A shooting occurred at a dorm on the campus of Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg this morning, and school officials quickly urged students to stay indoors and stay away from windows, according to information posted on the school's Web site.

The gunman remained at large, according to the Web posting, and classes were cancelled at the school.

The shooting was at the West Ambler Johnston building, and police were investigating, the Web posting said. The co-ed dorm, one of the largest residence halls on campus, houses 895 residents.

Madison Van Duyne, a student who was interviewed by telephone on CNN, said, "We are all in lockdown. Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from the windows just trying to be as safe as possible."

She said university officials were "doing a wonderful job of e-mailing us and just trying to keep us updated."

Last August the campus was shut down because of concerns that a gunman was on campus. The man, an escaped inmate accused of killing a sheriff's deputy and a security guard, was later captured at VirginiaTech.
