This virus is also known as MyWife, Blackmal, and Nyxem.

How would I get infected?
This worm spreads via email attachments and Windows file shares. If you are on a network, once a system in your network is infected it will try to infect any shared systems that it can access.

What will Blackworm do to my computer?

It will attempt to disable and/or remove any antivirus software it finds
It will attempt to add itself to the list of programs that run at boot time
It will allow remote access to your computer, which opens the door for other viruses to be installedOn the 3rd day of every month, beginning Friday, February 3, it will damage several types of files it finds on your computer and on any network shares (more information below)

How will Blackworm damage files on my computer?
Blackworm damages files by overwriting them with an error message. Please understand – once damaged by Blackworm, a file cannot be recovered. That file is permanently damaged. The only hope of recovering that file is to restore it from a backup.

What file types will Blackworm damage?
The following types of files will be destroyed on your computer and on any network shares accessible from your computer: DOC, XLS, MDE, MDB, PPT, PPS, RAR, PDF, PSD, DMP, and ZIP. We reiterate – these files will be permanently damaged and cannot be recovered by any antivirus software.

What can I do to protect myself from this virus?
To ensure yourself of the most protection against this virus, you should do the following:

Make sure your computer is current by checking to make sure you have the latest Windows Updates.
Verify that your antivirus software is current with up-to-date signatures and that it is running properly. If you do not have antivirus software, now would be a good time to consider using some. There are many affordable and even some free antivirus applications.
If you have a network in your home, make sure you do these things for every computer on your network.
If you have a wireless device, be sure that open access isn’t allowed, and that encryption is turned on. The documentation that came with your device should explain how to do this.
If you are on a business network, check with your Systems Administrators to verify that they are aware of this threat. What are my options if I am infected?
Though Microsoft has published instructions on cleaning your computer, it is better that you reload your operating system from scratch or from your vendor-supplied restore images. The reason for this is that Blackworm opens the door for other viruses to infect your system. However, if formatting the computer and reloading the operating system are not practical options for you, then you should follow Microsoft’s removal instructions included in this link:
